During the late 70's and early '80s, two companies introduced product ranges to the UK ready-to-run (RTR) model railway market that were of a significantly higher quality and fidelity to the prototype than their contemporaries. These companies were Palitoy, who marketed under the 'Mainline Railways' brand and Airfix, who marketed initially under their own name and latterly under the 'GMR' brand. The Airfix/GMR offering was short-lived and was eventually absorbed into the Mainline range. I was born in the late 1970s, grew up in the 1980s and was interested in model railways from a young age. Thus, as a young rail enthusiast, Mainline Railways models were objects of desire and I've been collecting them on-and-off for around 20 years.
This website is an attempt to commit to print, some of the information about the company and its products that I've obtained over that period. Hopefully, it will prove to be of use to other Mainline afficionados and those with an interest in historical model railways in general.
